To everyone’s surprise, and the Alexians first, Amazon has just unveiled a brand new device integrating its vocal assistant Alexa. At first sight, it would seem to be a worthy successor to Echo Spot, the Echo device that has already been installed in many cottages, including many bedrooms. A miniature Echo Show that seems to be a response to Lenovo Smart Clock powered by Google Assistant.
“Since the launch of the first Echo Show, our customers have made it clear to us how much they like to ask Alexa to show them things, whether it’s recipes, to-do lists, weather reports or song lyrics. With Echo Show 5, we allow them to add a connected screen in every room of the house, at a reasonable price and very simply,” says Jorrit Van der Meulen, Vice President, Amazon Devices International. “Its compact size is ideal for bedside tables and desks. In addition, Echo Show 5 is equipped with a camera cover for more serenity and control thanks to Alexa’s new features relating to your personal information. »
Echo Show 5: a multimedia experience in a compact design
Echo Show 5 clearly looks like its big brother Echo Show 2. With a 5.5-inch screen, an HD camera and an integrated camera cover, Echo Show 5 allows Alexa to show you things in every room of the house. Amazon promises us a rich sound and sells his new opus as the ideal device to watch clips on Vevo or listen to your favorite songs on Amazon Music, Spotify or Deezer.
You can also watch your series and other videos thanks to Prime Video or enjoy your daily flash. Coming soon: the new integration of wikiHow will allow you to access video tutorials by simple voice command. You will learn how to play chess, open a coconut or cook green beans, and much more…
A smart display designed around your privacy
If there is a sensitive issue concerning voice assistants, it is privacy. Echo devices are designed with multiple elements to protect and control your personal information, Echo Show 5 does not deviate from the rule with, like its predecessors, a button that electronically disables the microphone and camera, and displays a clear visual indicator when an audio or video stream is sent to the cloud. But Amazon seems to have taken the users’ comments into account, and this time Echo Show 5 features an integrated camera cover that makes it easy to disable the camera without preventing interaction with Alexa.
The e-merchant also offers new ways to more easily delete voice recordings on all devices with Alexa integrated. So it will soon be enough to ask “Alexa, delete what I just said” or “Alexa, delete everything I said today”, and the corresponding records will be deleted. In addition, a new Alexa privacy portal will soon provide centralized information on the design of Echo devices, as well as on the possibilities of controlling your Alexa experience. Amazon is obviously seeking to reassure its customers and is therefore very transparent.
